The sci-fi drama, which is the first TV series to ever launch simultaneously with a video game, was renewed for a second season, Syfy officially announced on Friday.

Production on season two, which will be 13 episodes, is set to begin in Toronto in August, with Syfy looking at a 2014 premiere.

The Grant Bowler and Julie Benz-led action drama debuted on April 15 to the second largest 18-49 demo audience rating in Syfy’s history.

“Bringing the rich world of Defiance to life has been an incredible team effort. We couldn’t ask for better partners than Kevin Murphy, his amazing cast and crew, and Trion Worlds,” Mark Stern, President of Original Content for Syfy and Co-Head of Original Content for UCP, said in statement. “We can’t wait to see where they take us in the second season.”

Slated to return for season two are showrunner Kevin Murphy and executive producers Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin.

A pilot for the series was taped in the spring. Production on the rest of the first season is scheduled to start Tuesday.

Julie Benz Marries Rich Orosco

Actress Julie Benz married Rich Orosco on Saturday, her rep confirms to PEOPLE.

The couple tied the knot at 6 p.m. at the historic John Sowden house in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles. The wedding featured a Mexican theme, in a nod to Cinco de Mayo and to the groom, a marketing executive, who is of Mexican heritage.

The house itself is known as the Jaws House, given that its striking facade, which also has been compared to a Mayan temple, looks like the gaping open mouth of a great white shark.

Engaged since last June, the former Dexter star, 40, met Orosco five years ago, her rep confirmed to PEOPLE at the time the engagement was announced.

Orosco, 39, popped the question with a customized Kwiat cushion-cut diamond and platinum engagement ring – complete with a diamond frame and milgrain edge band – in the backyard of the home they share in L.A.

“It was absolutely perfect,” Benz told PEOPLE.
